Backing up to tape is arduous and risky. Data may not be read or recovered in the future, due to the limited lifespan of tapes. Physically shipping tapes offsite is time consuming, costly and risky, as they could get damaged, lost or stolen. Then, you typically have to pay for long-term tape storage. Finally, recovering data from tape takes much longer than disk. And that’s after the tapes are found and shipped back to the data center. So what’s the alternative?
Most IT organizations use cloud storage for disaster recovery and long-term data retention. Many cloud vendors offer a range of storage options – including low-cost object storage and even lower-cost cold storage (like AWS Glacier). It’s much faster and easier to replicate backups to the cloud than using physical tape.
Having a hybrid solution that uses tiered storage is an even better approach. You can keep recent backups onsite for fastest recovery but also replicate to the cloud for disaster recovery. Then, older data can be migrated to lower-cost cold cloud storage to address long-term retention and compliance.
